Law in Connection With Moving to Spain

It is important to be aware that there are legal matters that should be considered when moving to Spain.

First and foremost, you must register as having left your home county in their register if you are going to stay abroad for a longer period. When moving to Spain, you are not automatically covered by the Spanish health insurance. Therefore, you should carry a European Health Insurance Card or make sure that the health insurance of your home country covers you. The Spanish health insurance (Seguridad Social) is compulsory for employees and self-employed persons, but the rules are not the same as in other countries. It is therefore important to check up on this.

As an EU citizen, you’ll automatically have a work permit in all EU countries, so it is not something you have to apply for. However, you are only allowed to stay in Spain for up to 3 months before you have to register with the Spanish authorities.

When the moving company has to make an offer, it is based on an assessment of the task as a whole, and therefore, it is important that you as a customer provide as much information as possible. This involves asking questions such as: How much household goods are involved? What kind of goods? Are there any special circumstances to be considered? Something particularly heavy? Should things be picked up/placed in a house or on the 6th floor of an office building? What does the timetable look like?

The schedule is especially important as there is a lot of planning and groundwork when it comes to an international move. And a longer deadline means a better opportunity for the supplier to cut the costs of performing the task and give you a better offer.
